Church Planting
- Getting Your Church Started
Who to Contact in Your State
Getting incorporated is not as difficult as it sounds. Below you will find a list telling you who to contact for each state in the country in order to get incorporated. Please note: While it is not necessary to have an attorney to get incorporated, retaining the services of an attorney who specializes in non-profit and church law can be a real asset.
At the very least, if you do not have an attorney help you through the incorporation process, consider having one review you articles of incorporation and bylaws once you have completed the process. Additionally, ask the attorney or a Certified Public Account (CPA) who specializes in church finances what your IRS filing requirements are for each year.
Secretaries
of State
When you incorporate, you will need to apply for an Employee Identification Number (EIN). Click below to download a PDF file of that form and its instructions from the IRS website. You may also apply for a EIN online.
Articles and Bylaws for Your Church
Click below to download a Microsoft
Word version of Articles of Incorporation. These articles
include the wording required for your church to become chartered
with Open Bible Churches.
Open Bible has designed five models of bylaws which meet all the minimum requirements for what should be included in good church bylaws. The link below will take you to the Open Bible national website (www.openbible.org
) where you can download and review each of the models. Model A follows the more traditional congregation approach to church governance. Model B follows a pastor-led model where elders are appointed by the pastor and confirmed by the congregation. With Model B the congregation only votes on major issues like the purchase of land or property. Page 11 of the "Supplemental Documents" PDF under the "Open Bible Manual" heading provides a chart comparing the five models side-by-side.
For new church starts, versions of these models are available which add provisions for founding pastors. Please contact the church planting director to get these.
The bylaws have all been made as Microsoft Word documents so you can edit them for your personal use.
